Five Apps Fight Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

Some time ago, short-drama apps ceased to be a fringe curiosity. According to Sensor Tower, the category earned about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. Full-year 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B, and by Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had risen to about $750M. Anyone who has searched a freedramashorts.com store for a short reels app has come across at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. Superficially, they look identical: vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Underneath, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that change what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds, picking a winner in each, and used only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Comparison Grid

The whole field sits on one screen here, before the rounds begin. As of September 2026, the prices are the figures listed in the US App Store, though they vary by country, platform and promotion. The market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. Wherever a cell says “not reported”, the figure was not published by any reliable source, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. The grid works as the scoreboard, and the rounds below provide the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale

ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still carries the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA gives it about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also pegs its 2025 revenue at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Released in April 2023 and now holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M by Sensor Tower’s count, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. The newest app in this lineup is DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, yet it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax seems to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Sitting just outside this lineup, GoodShort has, for context, about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, on market share, but only narrowly.

Round 2: Cost

This is the round where the apps look most alike. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all offer an automatically renewing weekly pass at about $19.99 in the US App Store. DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99, and ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”. DramaBox takes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, on the strength of a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. The number on your screen may differ, since prices change by country, platform and promotion.

Round 3: Free Options

When it comes to free viewing, the marketing gets loud and the details grow thin. ReelShort’s own blog states that one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes and that the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you earn 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which offer the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Only third-party guides list DramaBox’s exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, though the app has free options too. Winner: ReelShort, and clearly so.

Round 4: Platforms

Screens are where these apps really split apart. On top of iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app, while DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. The ShortMax domain forwards to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. With an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama holds the trump card. For anyone who only needs a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama claiming the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

By raw numbers, ShortMax is untouchable. The app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. By January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, and most of them were dubbed Chinese adaptations. Reports say more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. In response, DramaBox offers an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama has the most intriguing pipeline, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print

Here, DramaWave runs away with it. Downloads for offline viewing, on-screen comments and 1080p video feature in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. Viewers who switch between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. The fine print deserves a look too, because it varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say that refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”; My Drama, for its part, forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. On any of these apps, deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Round winner: DramaWave.

Best For: Our Final Picks

No single short drama app takes every round, so the right choice depends on how you watch. On Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Best for commuters and steady bingers is DramaWave, which combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for sheer volume, as its claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid. Best for backing the current revenue leader is DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. If you are tempted by all five, pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
